Report on the 28 Sept 2011 Finsbury Park Meeting

This was one of our smaller meetings (and accompanied by background cheers whenever Arsenal scored a goal in the main part of The Old Dairy). As with all our small meetings, this enabled some great indepth networking to take place – I noticed for instance that most people left with promises to be in touch with at least one other person at the meeting soon.

Keren Lerner of Top Left Design gave a very interesting and practical talk on various ways to boost your online presence, including:

1. If your website isn’t ready yet, don’t underestimate the power of a well designed holding page to attract interest before you open, particularly if you have a sign up box with a special offer in place.

2. When thinking about the design of your website, make a point of looking at websites NOT in your industry as well as those connected to what you do – this will give you some good, original ideas for your own site.

3. Learn to blog – it’s REALLY important!

There were lots more tips of course, illustrated with designs from Top Left Design’s own portfolio.

We rounded off the talk with one of our new Support Sessions in which we discussed how we could each put into place some of what we’d just learned for our own online marketing. This was also a chance to ask questions of Keren and the other people present, and to bounce ideas of each other. For instance, Shabaz Raja told us that, as a financial advisor, it was difficult for him to set up a webiste because he was so restricted as to what he could say and claim. Having successfully built several websites/blogs for financial advisors, Keren was able to reassure him that it was indeed possible and give him a few pointers.

It was good to have SBN member Neill Blokland of YseUp Marketing there as well, as online marketing is also his speciality (he’s been working with the web since he was five!). Neill will be giving a masterclass at our next West Hampstead meeting on Tuesday 4 October – Why You Can’t Afford To Ignore Smartphone Marketing – not to be missed as making sure your website is mobile-enabled is fast becoming a must-do for businesses.

Some others who were also present at the meeting: Debby Sass who makes cakes for special occasions; Sally Mayor who specialises in writing web content and blog posts for SMEs; virtual assistant Alyssa Aldersley; and Valerie Karczewski, a translator in three languages – English, French and Polish.
